Vandals' surge continues at expense of ISU

UI women avenge embarrassing season opener in Pocatello while collecting fifth straight victory, 73-63

MOSCOW -- The resurgence of the Idaho women's basketball team continued on Saturday with the Vandals' most notable coup to date: a revenge victory over Idaho State.

Idaho won its fifth consecutive game, dumping the Bengals 73-63 at the Kibbie Dome's Cowan Spectrum.

In the teams' mid-November season opener, Idaho State drubbed the Vandals by 25 points in Pocatello. Since then, the Idaho roster has been shaved down to seven players, but the Vandals have also won every game since an 0-4 start.

This is the first time the Vandals have had a five-game winning streak since 1992-93.

Idaho built an eight-point halftime edge, but Idaho State's Jennifer Griffin drove into the lane and hit a jumper to tie the game at 38 with 16:20 remaining.

With the game tied at 44-all, sophomore Taylor Benson hit her third 3-pointer of the night to start a 7-0 Vandal run.

The Bengals fought back to within five when Idaho's Meg LeBlanc pulled down an offensive board and slipped in a layup to give the Vandals a 60-53 lead with just under four minutes to play. LeBlanc had a career-high 12 rebounds as well as 14 points.

Idaho put the game on ice with 11-for-16 free throw shooting down the stretch.

Besides her key second-half bomb, Benson also buried a 3-pointer just before the end of the first half to inflate the Idaho lead. Benson came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points, which included 4-for-8 3-point gunning.

Darci Pemberton snared a career-high 14 rebounds and point guard Jen Schooler added a career-high 11 assists.

Idaho's next opponent will be Saint Louis at a University of Montana tournament in Missoula on Friday.
