HUGE weekend in Moscow for Vandals

What is probably the busiest home weekend of the winter sports season is here for the University of Idaho Vandals who will host two critical Big West Conference women's basketball games, a huge collegiate indoor track meet, and the final home swim meet of the season with Palouse bragging rites on the line.

With the festivities of Wednesday's LOI Day in the rear-view mirror, Univesity of Idaho football head coach Nick Holt will hit the road TODAY (Thursday) and visit with northern Idaho Vandal fans in a luncheon meeting at the Coeur d'Alene Resort at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required, but contact Bob Yuditsky @ 765-8002 to see if space is available.

Thursday evening one of the largest crowds of the season is anticipated in the Cowan Spectrum as the Lady Vandals host conference-leading UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. The Vandals stunned the Gauchos 75-62 in Santa Barbara in the first round of conference action, and if they duplicate the feat on their home floor Thursday they will move into first place in the conference standings.

Friday, the Vandals will host the first day of the McDonald's Collegiate Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Kibbie Dome. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the men's discus competition, followed by the women's discus. Running events begin at 3 p.m. with the sprint and hurdle events in the men's heptathlon and the women's pentathlon.

On Saturday, day 2 of the McDonald's Collegiate Invitational gets underway at 10:30.

Also on Saturday at 12 noon, the Vandal swim squad will make its final home appearance of the season when it hosts Washington State in a dual meet.

The weekend comes to a close in the Cowan Spectrum Saturday night at 7 when the Lady Vandals take the floor hosting Cal Poly. The Mustangs upset the Vandals 72-69 in San Luis Obispo last month, one of only two BWC losses for the Vandals.

Next MONDAY, Coach Holt will be at the Lewiston Red Lion Inn to discuss his recruits starting at 12 noon.
