Women's hoops 81 RPI rating tops Big West

The Lady Vandals dropped to second place in the Big West Conference standings following their loss at Cal State Northridge Saturday, but they continue to be the top team in terms of their RPI (ratings percentage index) according to Collegiate Basketball News.

In ratings released Sunday the Vandals are ranked 86th in the country down from their rating of 81 last week. UC Santa Barbara is next with a rating of 103 (down from 102) followed by Long Beach State at 107. Other ratings of interest include Vandal opponents Georgia at 15, Utah 28, Gonzaga 43, Montana 63, California 114, Eastern Washington 155, and Boise State 185.

The NCAA Tournament traditionally takes the top 64 teams in the country. The Women's NIT involves 32 teams chosen after the NCAA brackets are released. Ratings are not the only factor in choosing teams for the WNIT, a post-season invitational. Attendance is also one of several factors taken into consideration by the selection committee. Idaho won the WNIT in 1986.

According to Collegiate Basketball News, the RPI is used by the NCAA to help select at-large teams for the NCAA tournament as well as seeding of the entire field for both men and women. The RPI combines three weighted components to rate a team: Schedule strength (50%), winning percentage (25%), and opponent's schedule strength (25%).
