2005 Vandal FOOTBALL Schedule Released

Today the University of Idaho released it's 2005 football schedule, and it's the best we've seen in many years BY FAR! Home dates include Hawaii, Fresno State, Utah State and Louisiana Tech. Most of the road trips are short, including jaunts to Washington State, Washington, and Boise State. Idaho only leaves the northwest to take on UNLV, Nevada, San Jose State, and New Mexico State. Season tickets go on sale Monday!

MOSCOW, Idaho – Vandal football will be on the Palouse for five games when the University of Idaho embarks on its inaugural Western Athletic Conference campaign.

The Vandals' 11-game schedule includes a road trip to Washington State and four WAC games at the Kibbie Dome. Unlike UI's 2004 schedule, which spanned five time zones and sent the Vandals on an odyssey that took them virtually around the world in terms of miles traveled, 2005 doesn't have any games outside the Mountain and Pacific time zones.

Idaho opens 2005 at Washington State on Sept. 3 with road games at UNLV (Sept. 10) and the University of Washington (Sept. 17) on the next two weekends.

The Vandals' first WAC game is their home opener against Hawaii on Sept. 24. Utah State travels to Moscow the following weekend (Oct. 1) with a trip to Nevada (Oct. 8) up next. After a bye week, Fresno State comes to Moscow on Oct. 22. The Vandals then travel to New Mexico State (Oct. 29) before their second off weekend.

The season concludes with a home game against Louisiana Tech (Nov. 12) and road games at Boise State (Nov. 19) and San Jose State (Nov. 26).

While 2005 is UI's first season in the Western Athletic Conference, the schedule features teams that have been part of UI's history since 1894. The only newcomer to the schedule is Louisiana Tech.

The Vandals' series with Washington State is one of their oldest. The teams first played in 1894 and most recently last season. WSU leads the series 67-17-3, which includes its 2004 49-8 decision.

UI and UNLV are tied with two victories each in a series first played in 1975. The Vandals won, 48-38, the last time the two played – 1994.

Idaho and Washington have played since 1900 with the Huskies commanding a 34-2-2 edge. UW won 45-14 in 2003 – the most recent game.

The Vandals were at Hawaii in 2004 and lost 52-21 in the season finale. With the victory, Hawaii built a 4-1 lead in the series that initially was played in 1930.

Idaho and Utah State have played since 1916. USU took the lead in the series, 15-14—2, with last year's 14-7 victory at Logan.

This year's game at Nevada marks the first between the Vandals and the Wolf Pack since the Wolf Pack left the Big West Conference after the 1999 season. Idaho won the last time – 42-33 at Nevada in 1999 – but the Wolf Pack leads the series 13-9.

Idaho and Fresno State have played on occasion since 1946. Idaho leads the series 4-3, although Fresno State won 41-28 in 1978 – the most recent meeting.

The Vandals first played New Mexico State in 1971 but it wasn't until both were members of first the Big West then the Sun Belt that the game became an annual one. Idaho leads the series 8-3, which includes a 35-31 victory in the most recent game in 2003.

The Idaho-Boise State rivalry is a storied one. First played in 1971, the series is led 17-16-1 by Idaho, which lost 65-7 at BSU last year.

Idaho won the last time it played San Jose State. That 17-12 victory in 1998 allowed the Vandals to close the gap in the series (first played in 1946) to 8-7-1.
