The following is a preseason excerpt from the College of the Redwoods site:

"Talifaia "Ryan" Atoe, Defensive Tackle. Ryan comes from The Dalles, Oregon. He was an all-conference Mid-Empire selection for College of the Redwoods in 2000. In high school Ryan was voted the MVP of his conference as an offensive lineman. Ryan bench presses 385, squats 530, cleans 395, and runs a 4.9 forty. He also has an impressive 36" vertical. At 6'2" and 290 pounds Ryan gets off the block very well and posted 5 sacks as a freshmen for the Corsairs. Ryan is expected to anchor the Corsairs defensive line in 2001 and is the only returning starter on the defensive line. Ryan will graduate in the spring of 2002."

Frankly, after this statement, coupled with the honors listed in his bio above, there really isn't a whole lot more to say. Ryan is an exceptional athlete who has the physical gifts and intensity level to succeed at the 1-A level. He spent most of this season being double and triple teamed, and still walked away with 45 tackles and just about every honor you can give a JC tackle as dominant as Ryan.

Ryan, on paper at this point, embodies exactly what our defense was missing last season. Welcome back to the Northwest!
