Field goal kickers typically don't receive much press, and even fewer actually get offered scholarships right out of highschool. The situation with Mike Barrow, however, is wildly different. Mike has an exceptional degree of control when it comes to kicking a football, and his performance the past 3 years at St. Bonaventure has been outstanding. How good? He was named by StarPrep to their all West Coast team, and their write-up on him is as follows:

"Pre-season, 2001 - Mike is a two-time All-League performer and it is easy to see why. Last season while helping his team to a CIF championship. Mike was 12-16 on FGs with a long of 42 yards. He was 85-95 on PATs and averaged 59.9 yards per kickoff and had 32 touchbacks. Attended and impressed at the Notre Dame camp this summer."

"Post-season, 2001 - Barrow is a three-time All-League performer and he added All-State and All-County to his list of honors. He has a powerful leg that had 70% of his kickoffs land in the end zone for touchbacks. Mike is a great punter too, he can kick deep with air or pooch kick it. He now holds the Ventura County record for kick scoring [124 career attempts, 181 career points]. Barrow kicked 48 PATs and six FGs for CIF Champion team."

Mike entertained invitations to walk-on at Michigan, Arizona, UNLV, Portland State and Sacramento State, but chose to accept a scholarship offer from the Univesity of Idaho instead. He'll be joining St. Bonaventure teammates Mike Bonelli and new recruit Brandon Mascorro on campus in Moscow, and cited Idaho's recent hire of Gary Coston, who will focus on Special Teams (a rare thing in most college football programs), as a primary reason for joining the Vandals.

Whatever his reasons were, Mike has the physical tools it takes to succeed at the D-1 level, and we look forward to watching him develop at Idaho.
