Recruiting Focus: Special Teams

Idaho was looking to improve its special teams performance from a year ago, and in the process landed an All West Coast kicker from St. Bonaventure High School in Southern California. The move to hire Gary Coston, Idaho's new special teams coordinator, looks to have already started paying off.

Last season the Vandals struggled mightily in virtually all facets of special teams play. Whether it was kicking field goals, pinning the opponent deep in their own territory on kick-offs and punts, tackling an opponent after a kick, or even kicking PATs, the team struggled. Our struggles were so vast, in fact, that Head Coach Tom Cable hired Gary Coston specifically to run Idaho's special teams. The result is highschool recruit Mike Barrow, a Southern California athlete who chose Idaho over his other options due in large part to the hire of Coston.

Although his college career hasn't even started yet, his high school career numbers compare favorably with another Idaho great and NFL Pro Bowler, Mike Hollis, currently with the Jacksonville Jaguars. If his numbers are even close to Hollis' numbers at Idaho (and we think they will), then Vandal fans will have a lot to look forward to in the future.

- Last Friday Idaho landed touted JC recruit Jason Jones, a 6-4, 330 Defensive Lineman out of Pasadena City College. We're collecting data on him and will post an article on the front page soon. We beat out North Carolina State and Toledo for this recruit, and he caps off a huge effort to shore up the Vandal defensive line problems of a year ago. Jason's addition to the team gives us 3 new JC transfers and 2 new highschool recruits on the interior defensive line alone.
