Utah State Outlasts Idaho

After falling behind Utah State in the first half by 17, Idaho's scrappy team cut the Aggie lead to just 1 point with 4:50 left in the game. But Desmond Penigar (23 points on the night) and the rest of the Aggies would prevail by a final score of 63-54 in front of almost 6,900 fans at the Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.

Utah State (13-3 Big West, 21-4 overall) built a 24-7 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game, due in large part to the Aggies hitting five 3-pointers and playing solid defense. Idaho, however, outscored the Aggies 21-10 the remainder of the first half and went into halftime down 34-28.

Bethul Fletcher tied his career-high with 20 points, and the Vandals shot an impressive 48.6% from the field. But Utah State is 21-4 for a reason, and were able to control the game enough in the end to secure the victory.

Idaho (6-10 Big West, 9-16 overall) has clinched a birth in the Big West Tournament, which begins Thursday March 7th at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. After a one year hiatus, Idaho's likely first round opponent will be either Utah State (currently #1 in the Big West), or UC Irvine, both of whom have clinched either a #1 or #2 seeding at the end of the season.

Idaho has just 2 games left on the season, both of which are on the road at Cal State Northridge (Thursday, 2/28) and at Pacific (Saturday, 3/3).
