Volleyball To Host Nevada And USU

After playing 13 consecutive matches on the road, head coach Debbie Buchanan and the Vandal volleyball squad will finally get a chance to play in the friendly confines of Memorial Gym this week as they host a pair of WAC matches hosting Nevada Thursday and Utah State Saturday.

Both matches begin at 7 p.m., and the first 500 spectators in the gym for the Reno game will receive a free I Vandal key chain.

Heading into the homestand the Vandals are 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in the WAC. They picked up their first conference win by a 3-1 count at Fresno State last Saturday after dropping a 2-3 decision at San Jose State in their conference debut. In the win against Fresno senior outside hitter Meghan Brown set a new Vandal record for digs breaking the old mark of 1,184 set last year by Mandy Becker. Brown currently has 1,188 digs.

The Nevada Wolfpack, 7-5 on the year and 2-0 in WAC action, will bring a six-game winning streak to Memorial Gym having most recently beaten Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State in Reno last week. The two teams have not met since 1999 when they split a pair of matches. Idaho holds a 13-7 edge in the overall series.

Utah State is likewise 2-0 in WAC play and 9-6 on the season. Last week the Aggies swept New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech in Logan. The Aggies lead the Vandals 13-9 overall. The two squads split last season.

Next Tuesday the Vandals will host Gonzaga in non-conference action and will travel to Boise State October 8 for a 1 p.m. conference match.
