Rob Overton: Nearing A Decision

With the recruiting process amping up and LOI Day bearing down, Scout.com caught up with highly touted Moreau High School product Rob Overton (6-5, 224) this afternoon. Considered by most recruiting services as one of the top 40 tightends in America and an athlete that could make an impact on either side of the ball for the Idaho Vandals, he may make a decision as early as this Friday.

BACKGROUND: Despite his team finishing with an 0-10 record this season, Rob Overton was impressive and is currently ranked by Scout.com as the #39 TE prospect in America. As a senior he recorded 56 catches for 796 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively he logged 65 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 4 fumbles recoveries and 2 forced fumbles. As a junior caught 39 passes for 441 yards and seven touchdowns. On defense, he racked up 79 tackles (19 for loss) and seven sacks. He was named the offensive MVP for his team and was a second team all-league selection. Overton also received second team all-state under-class honors at the multi-purpose position. He dominated the Palo Alto NIKE Camp this summer.

On January 3rd, in a report published by Allen Wallace of Scout.com, Overton said he favors Idaho (offer, Dec. 9 official visit) slightly over Idaho State (offer), Portland State (offer), Washington State and San Jose State."

"I'm okay with playing either tight end or defensive end," said California prospect Rob Overton. "I don't have a preference. Idaho wants me for defensive end, Idaho State wants me for both sides of the ball and Washington State thinks I'll be better as a tight end..."

California tight end/defensive end Rob Overton (6-5, 224, 4.75), from Moreau Catholic High in Hayward, said he favors Idaho (offer, Dec. 9 official visit) slightly over Idaho State (offer), Portland State (offer), Washington State and San Jose State.

Have you gone on a trip to visit the University of Idaho?
Yes, December 9th through the 12th.

How did that visit go for you?
It went very well....I liked it alot. They're real nice people, and their facilties are really nice.

Being from California, was it a bit different being up in Moscow?
Yeah, a little bit. A smaller town and stuff, but I liked it a lot.

Did you commit to Idaho while you were in Moscow?
No, I'm going to have a decision either tomorrow or Friday.

What were your impressions of the program itself?
I think they are a very up-and-coming program. I like all the stuff that they're doing. This will be their first true year with all the players that they wanted in there. I think they will be very good in the years to come.

What other schools are you considering?
There's San Jose State, Portland State and Idaho State.

Have you taken all your visits?
Yes...my decision will be made in the up and coming days.

You played both defensive end and tightend in High School. What are you primarily being recruited to play, and what position do you want to play in college?
They [the Idaho staff] told me defensive end when I talked to them up there. I'd be truely happy to play defensive end.

Is that what you want to do in college is play defensive end?
Yes.
