Vandals 2-Deep Depth Chart
Below is a list of some new faces we've noticed listed among the Top 2 at each position, including a couple recruits who could see immediate action this year:
Kelly Talavou, 6-2, 310, True Freshman - The defensive line was the source of much angst last season, and the new defensive staff worked overtime rebuilding this group this recruiting season. Three JC transfers and 2 talented High School prospects were brought in, with true freshman Kelly Talavou out of Los Angeles making an immediate impact, even given his youth. Listed as a backup at Nose Guard behind returning starter Brian Howard, he'll be lining up against a solid BSU interior offensive line, but should have the size, strength and agility to make his presence known.
Keith Greer, 6-2, 250, True Freshman - With a season ending injury to sophomore Luke Smith-Anderson and this year's probable starter Mike McCoy recovering from off-season hernia surgery, Keith finds himself near the top of the depth chart at Tightend (he will backup junior Kelly Nead). A talented prospect out of Mater Dei High School in southern California, he was ranked among the Top 50 TE prospects in the nation this past recruiting season.
Brian Yarno, 6-0, 236, Sophomore - Brian, the son of Vandal great John Yarno, breaks into the Idaho 2-Deep roster this week at Fullback. Idaho's returning Long Snapper from last season, Brian also saw playing time at fullback. He's put in a big effort this off-season and is starting to round out his skills as a productive fullback. He will be backing up senior work-horse Kevin O'Connell.
Chad Troxel, 5-6, 175, Junior - Chad walked on in 1999 from Lake City High School in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho and redshirted that year. Listed as backup to sophomore Simeon Stewart at Free Safety, he's seen sporadic playing time over the last 2 years, and has worked hard this off-season to move up the depth chart.
Michael Togafau, 6-3, 291, Sophomore - Michael, a redshirt sophomore out of Pittsburg, California, has been in a heated battle for a starting job on the offensive line this fall, and finds himself backing up senior strong guard Robert Mitchell. He's looked solid all spring and should be more than capable to step in and be effective if the need arises this fall.
The depth on this year's team is significantly improved over a year ago, and its starting to show. Several positions are listed as Co-Starters (weakside linebacker will likely have both senior James Staley and junior Chad Kodama seeing significant playing time this fall), and most of the 2-Deep roster should see action this weekend. Given how thin we were across the board last year, the opportunity to rest the starters when needed during each game should be an asset this fall.
