Around the Clubhouse

As Idaho prepares for its showdown with MTSU this weekend in a critical conference game, here are a few notes from around campus.

Sun Belt Conference Going Western
This week the Sun Belt announced that its University Presidents had agreed to extend full conference membership to Utah State University and the University of Idaho. USU is not currently a member of the conference, while Idaho is currently a football-only member. USU is expected to formally accept the offer soon, while Idaho must have their full membership blessed by the Idaho State Board of Education. Idaho is expected to hear the SBOE's decision sometime in November.

Current plans appear to call for a western grouping of SBC teams, comprised of Idaho, Utah State, Denver and New Mexico State for basketball, volleyball and soccer. Golf, Tennis and Track would continue to compete with current regional competition, and would compete for Conference Championships at the end of the season. Although the price could reach $100,000 in additional travel costs, its a move that must happen for the UI, as the relationship between USU, Idaho and the Big West has been strained as the Big West heads towards reclassifying itself as a California only conference that does not sponsor football.

Sneak Peek at Vandal Hoops
Second year Idaho Men's Basketball Head Coach Leonard Perry invites all Vandal hoops fans to come watch practice this Saturday, October 26. The team will begin practice at 4:00pm in Memorial Gym, and the Homecoming football game against Middle Tennessee should be concluded by that time! This is a great opportunity to see the new Vandals, including the three new trees in Jack May (6-8), John Tinnon (6-8), and David Radlovic (6-9). This is going to be a significantly different looking team than last year's group (just 1 returning player with significant minutes from a year ago), with a refreshing combination of youth, athleticsm and talent in the backcourt, frontcourt, and in the middle. Make plans to check these guys out!
