BREAKING NEWS: Marboe is a Vandal

ONE OF THE GEM STATE's top prospects -- and one of Robb Akey's top targets -- is headed to Idaho. Brad Marboe out of Idaho Falls had previously made an oral pledge to Wyoming but over the past month, came to realize his heart was at UI and has verballed to Idaho, his father Kent tells

Brad Marboe (6-3.5, 195, 4.7) was busy lacing up the sneakers to hit the hardcourt early Thursday evening for Idaho Falls but Kent said the final decision has been made -- Brad will be wearing the silver and gold next season.

After the basketball game this evening, Brad will fly out first thing tomorrow morning to Moscow on an official visit to Idaho.

More details from Marboe himself are expected in the days ahead but in a nutshell, said his father, the chance to stay home and play for his state school and the opportunity to be a part of Idaho's resurgence under coach Robb Akey, among other things, resulted in the change of heart over the last month.

In the final analysis, said the elder Marboe, it wasn't that Wyoming did anything wrong, it was just that Brad felt Idaho was the best place for him. Marboe's dad also said Wyoming was aware Brad had made the decision to attend Idaho.

Marboe was named 5A first team All-State at defensive back following his senior campaign, as well as first team all-region and all-county as a defensive back and kick returner, and second team all-county at wide receiver.

Marboe played safety and receiver at Idaho Falls, but his collegiate future looked to be at either linebacker, tight end or h-back. Idaho liked him as an athlete with an eye towards the linebacker spot.

An accomplished track and field athlete, Marboe's personal best in the 400-m last track season was 51-flat.

Also an academic standout, he's an honor roll student, a classification at Idaho Falls that requires a 3.5 GPA or better. And talk about bloodlines, Kent starred at Skyline High and later Idaho State, playing on the 1981 Bengals' D-IIA national championship team. Grandfather Kent Sr. played for Idaho back in the 50s. Both of Brad's uncles, Mike and Scott, earned football scholarships
