Hard-hitting safety to visit Moscow

Hard hitting safety GARY WALKER (6-1, 185) has been recruited aggressively this year, with Arizona State, Fresno State and Idaho currently in his top three. He has visited ASU and Fresno already, and heads to Moscow this weekend on an official visit. Asked to describe his style: "I'm aggressive and I like to hit, and I think that's a strength - trying to go out there every play and make a hit."

Idaho assistant coach Patrick Libey is leading the Idaho recruiting charge for highly sought athlete Gary Walker (6-1, 185, 4.51), a standout safety at Redlands East Valley, the former high school of Andre Ferguson, a redshirt freshman defensive end / linebacker at Idaho this last fall.

The recruiting trail began at Arizona State, where the Sun Devils are looking at Walker as a wide receiver or cornerback initially.

"Arizona State, I visited them December 13; so that was the first school I visited," Walker said. "It was a very nice campus. The coaches were nice. The facilities were good - very nice. I had a good time out there spending a lot of time with the players, and got to talk to the coaches and all that."

Fresno State and Idaho are recruiting Walker primarily as a free safety. Last weekend he visited the Fresno campus and came away impressed.

"I went [to Fresno] on Friday and I just came back yesterday," Walker said. "I had a really good time up there because I already know some of the players; so I had a really good time with the players and then with the coaches, they were really hands-on and really care. They made us feel comfortable, like a family atmosphere. Both places [were] really good.

This week marks his first trip to the Moscow campus. "At Idaho I believe it's gonna be the same type of thing like at Fresno," Walker said. "With all the coaches really involved and caring about you. And I think it's gonna be really nice facilities, too. I'm really hyped up to get out there and see."

"I met the head coach, coach Akey," Walker added. "I like the coaching staff. All the coaches I met so far have been really nice and I have a pretty good relationship with them so far. I'm really hyped up to go on the recruiting trip."

The future Criminal Justice major is looking at all three programs equally as signing day approaches. "Right now I have an open mind, but I really like all three of them actually, to be honest. I have an open mind to all of them right now."

Asked to describe his playing style, the senior didn't miss a beat. "I'm aggressive and I like to hit. I like to put my body on the line -- I'm gonna try my hardest to stay aggressive and be physical. I think that's a strength of just not being scared of nobody -- trying to go out there, every play, and make a hit."

Walker was clocked at a 4.51, powers clean 275 lbs. and he benches 265.
