Men's and Women's Hoops Update

The Idaho Men (2-4 BWC, 6-9) had a rough 2 game road trip this week, including a hard fought loss at Big West Conference leading UC Irvine last night. Conversely, the Idaho Women (3-3 BWC, 5-11) evened their Conference mark last night with a win over UC Irvine at the Cowan Spectrum.

MEN'S SUMMARY
This week, coming off a big win at the Cowan Spectrum last Saturday over Cal Poly, Idaho hit the road for a 2 game swing through California. The road however was harsh, as Idaho lost to a struggling Long Beach State team (1-4 BWC, 2-12) on Thursday, then lost last night at Conference leading UC Irvine (4-1 BWC, 10-4) by a final score of 45-58.

True Freshman point guard Ronnie Smith continues to impress as he's taken over the starting role for injured sophomore Tanoris Shepard. On the night Ronnie, a McDonald's All-American candidate as a senior in high school last year, sunk 18 points, grabbed 3 defensive rebounds, 2 steals and 3 assists. The young man is an electrifying presence on the court, and with time should become a leader on this team.

Next up for the Vandals is a much needed 3 game home stretch, starting with Cal State Fullerton (3-2 BWC, 5-10 Overall) on Thursday night, followed-up on Saturday with UC Riverside (2-3 BWC, 3-8 overall). Then, the following week, the Vandals take on Utah State (4-2 BWC, 13-4) in a much anticipated game on February 1st (Saturday) at the Cowan Spectrum. If you haven't had a chance to get to any games yet, the next 2 weeks would be a great time to make the trip to Moscow!

Starting Wing, #23 Heather Thoelke (6-0, Junior), is leading the Vandals with 13.2 points per game.

WOMEN'S SUMMARY
This has been a rough and tumble season for the young Idaho Women's basketball team, but things appear to be coming together for this group in Conference play. Saturday night the Women improved their conference mark to 3-3, and their overall season record to 5-11. Not bad for a team that starts 2 transfers, a freshman and a sophomore, and with freshmen coming off the bench.

This week they started with a tough home loss to Long Beach State at the Spectrum, but last night evened their Conference mark with a convincing 74-68 victory over UC Irvine.

Next up for the Vandal Women is a 2 game road trip this week at Cal State Fullerton (1-3 BWC, 3-12) and at UC Riverside (1-3 BWC, 4-11).
