Lineman Dan Feeney Talks Visit, Offer

The Fighting Illini football team continues to attract interest from a large number of football prospects. Among those who attended the recent Junior Day was offensive lineman Dan Feeney. He will be returning again for the Spring Game.

Dan Feeney is a rising offensive line prospect from Orland Park Carl Sandburg. His recent Illinois visit was a productive one.

"I thought the visit was very good. I really liked the campus and all the facilities. And I really enjoyed all the coaches. They were really nice. I liked how they coached, and I liked how they treated them like family."

Feeney's visit included good news. The Illini extended a scholarship offer.

"I'm really excited about the offer. And my mom really loves it because she's an alum. She was really happy."

Illini offensive line coach Joe Gilbert would be his coach if he chooses the UI. Their visit excited the young lineman.

"I'd love to work with Coach Gilbert. From what I saw, he's a really great guy. He's really hard on the players, but in a good way. I like that."

Feeney also likes offensive coordinator Paul Petrino.

"Coach Petrino is my recruiting coach. We had some one-on-one time when I went down there last Saturday. He's a really good guy, and he's a good coach. He treats everybody like family."

The 6'-4", 295 pounder figures he'll be an interior lineman in college.

"I'm listed as a guard, and I'll probably play that in college because I'm not quite as big as some of these other kids. Some of those guys are 6'-7" or 6'-8"."

Feeney shared his thoughts on his best traits as a lineman and what he wants to improve.

"I work hard, I move my feet and maintain my blocks as long as I can to the whistle. I'd like to work on technique, faster feet, hand work and moving quicker off the ball."

What is he looking for in a college?

"Education is the most important thing. And also a good football program with a good coaching staff."

Two Big 10 schools lead for Feeney's services at this time, although more offers could happen down the road.

"I went to Indiana University as well, and they offered me. I went to Northern Illinois, and I went to Purdue so far. I have two offers. I'm gonna try to go to as many summer camps as I can, to the colleges I'd like to go to."

Carl Sandburg had a tough ending to an excellent season in 2011. Feeney hopes they can do even better this fall.

"We made it to the second round of the playoffs last year, but we lost in the second round to Lyons Township by one point. I was really mad. It was really close. I thought the refs kind of blew it a little bit though, but I can't really blame them.

"We have four offensive linemen back. Hopefully we'll have a really good year."

The Indiana spring game is on the agenda for this weekend, and he will be in attendance at the Illini Spring Game April 23rd.
