Corey Liuget Drafted by Chargers In 1st Round

Fighting Illini defensive tackle Corey Liuget was selected as the 18th pick in the NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers Thursday evening. Liuget had been invited to New York for the festivities, and his wait was worthwhile as he was celebrated on national TV with his new team's hat and jersey in hand.

Corey Liuget lost weight and became driven to excel his junior year at Illinois. He was rewarded Thursday by being selected as the 18th pick and third defensive tackle in the NFL draft. He is now a member of the San Diego Chargers.

Liuget plays with passion and goes all out on every down. He has amazing quickness for a 6'-2", 300 pounder and is considered a 3-technique tackle. He had mixed emotions about leaving the Illini a year early, but he was rewarded with a dream come true.

The product of Hialeah High School in Miami totaled 63 tackles in 2010, including 29 solos. He was credited with 12 5 tackles for 43 yards in losses. Included in that total were 4 5 sacks for 27 yards in losses. In addition, he had 3 pass breakups and 10 quarterback hurries.

The Fighting Illini improved tremendously this past season, especially on defense where Liuget often occupied two blockers and still pressured opposing quarterbacks. The Illini finished with a 7-6 record and a victory over Baylor in the Texas Bowl.
