Indianapolis Point Guard Ponders UI Offer

The Fighting Illini coaching staff has made it clear they want a point guard to be one of the main pieces of their 2012 class. Thursday afternoon point guard Ronnie Johnson visited Champaign, and the Illini extended a scholarship offer. He came away impressed with the visit.

Ronnie Johnson is a 5'-10" point guard with good quickness and penetration ability. He finds his man in the lane and has solid vision. The Illinois coaches like what they have seen and offered him a scholarship yesterday. He talks about the offer.

"They told me they are offering me a scholarship. They said they needed a point guard in the class of 2012. They told me about the situation with another point guard coming in the class before me."

What was his reaction?

"It is a good offer. Illinois is a good school. I have to look into it more "

The lefty enjoyed his visit to Champaign.

"Everything went well. I toured the campus and scrimmaged with the players. I also got to sit down and talk with the coaches."

Can he imagine himself in the Orange and Blue?

"I can see myself there. It is a basketball school."

The 5'-10" Johnson has narrowed his recruitment down to two Big 10 powers.

"Right now it is Illinois and Purdue."

What is the biggest factor in his collegiate decision?

"Playing time will be a factor. I just want to go somewhere where I can play."

His brother Terone is currently a guard for the Boilermakers. The younger Johnson says that won't play a major role in his decision.

"He is not a big factor. I would like to play with him, but it wouldn't hurt me if I didn't. It doesn't play a huge factor. He is not pressuring me."

Johnson is going to discuss his decision with his family. He is not sure exactly when he will decide but says it will most likely be in the next month.
