Florida Offensive Tackle Has Illini Offer

Fighting Illini football coaches continue to scour the countryside for top prospects to add to their 2012 recruiting class. Offensive line coach Joe Gilbert may have found a gem in Miami. A former basketball player, Ereck Flowers has the size and mobility to be an excellent college tackle.

Illinois has offered Miami Norland tackle Ereck Flowers a scholarship.

"I was excited," Flowers stated.

Things have been moving fast for Flowers. The 6'-6", 305 pounder didn't even play football until recently.

"Before I played basketball. I guess in D-1 (basketball), you've got to be 6'-8" or 6'-9" to play center. I guess I thought I wouldn't go anywhere with that, so I decided to play football. So last year was the first year I played football."

He played for Dr. Krop, a team without much talent or name recognition. He moved to Norland after the first semester.

"I was at Krop last year, and we weren't very good. I decided to come to Norland because my dad didn't want to drive all the way to Krop, and he didn't want me on the train. With that and the team, it all added up.

"I'm with a much better team now. Everybody's getting after it. It looks like we'll have a real good season."

Colleges are beginning to take notice.

"I have offers from South Florida, Illinois, FIU, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Memphis, and Buffalo."

Flowers enjoyed meeting Illini offensive line coach Joe Gilbert.

"He seemed like a real cool guy. Right now, I'm just looking to build a relationship. He said he liked me and said I would be a left tackle."

He has much to learn about line play, but the athleticism is there.

"I think I'm a pretty good run blocker. I'm just trying to get better at pass blocking right now. Like when a d-end changes direction, to be able to do something else, like stopping his momentum. I'd like to get better at everything all-around."

Flowers hopes to set up a visit to Illinois this summer.

"I haven't visited any schools yet. I've just recently gotten these offers. So hopefully I can set something up this summer. I'll have to talk to my dad about it, but hopefully I can come up there for a visit."

Flowers knows what he wants in a college.

"Academics is important. I'm looking for a place that is good on the field. A place I fit in and feels more like a family."

He realizes Illinois meets his criteria.

"Illinois is something I really want to look into. I know it's one of the top schools academically."

Flowers hasn't finalized a college major as yet.

"I was thinking about majoring in Public Administration. I'm not really sure. People always find out what they want to do when they get to college."
