Vontrell Williams Wants To Make Sure

The Fighting Illini football team began fall practices Thursday. Three high school football recruits took in the action, including Chicago Mt. Carmel defensive tackle Vontrell Williams. He has delayed a commitment decision while he gets a better feel for the schools on his list.

Vontrell Williams has long loved the University of Illinois, but he has other good offers and wants to be certain of his college choice.

"I'm not sure when I'll be making my decision. I've decided to postpone it. There's been a lot of things going on. I've been talking to my parents, and I've decided to postpone it."

Williams visited the Illini for the first day of fall practice Thursday. He and friend Shaq Joiner, a linebacker at Chicago Simeon, took in the action. Speaking shortly after his arrival, he explained his reasons for the visit.

"Basically, I want to see how the guys get along. Hang out with some of the guys. Me and Glenn Foster, we talk, with him being a Mt. Carmel graduate.

"I just want to come out here and let my family get around the atmosphere. Let them see exactly what Illinois is all about."

It is an important decision, so the defensive tackle wants to make certain it is the correct one.

"One thing, I need to be sure. I've said since day 1 I want to be sure about the school. That's what I'm doing now. I'm going around, making last minute trips. Just basically being sure about the decision I make. I have to live with it."

Williams listed his top schools.

"Definitely the University of Illinois. Indiana, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa."

Perhaps he is waiting in hope of additional scholarship offers. Not all his favorite schools have offered at this time.

"Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa have not offered. Georgia Tech, I'm not too sure if they've offered or not. I camped there and dominated."

He doesn't have much time to take visits before the start of Mt. Carmel's football practices.

"We start next Tuesday. That's when we report in."
