Safety Prospect Likes Visit, Receives Offer

Three Detroit Cass Tech football stars were offered scholarships by the Fighting Illini coaching staff after their visits to campus Saturday. Among them was safety Delano Hill. Like his teammates, Hill had a good time for Junior Day and appreciates the offer.

Delano Hill enjoyed his visit to Illinois Saturday.

"It was real nice there. They showed us a good time."

He received good news while in Champaign-Urbana.

"Me, Kenton Gibbs and Dennis Finley got offers. I appreciated the offer. I liked the staff and the campus."

How many offers does the 6'-1", 185 pounder have at this point?

"I now have offers from Iowa, Syracuse and Illinois."

Illinois defensive line coach Keith Gilmore graduated from Detroit Cass Tech, so he had a good starting point visiting with a large Cass Tech contingent at Saturday's Illini practice.

"Coach Gilmore is real cool. He tells us what it would be like an Illinois."

Gilmore wasn't the only coach who made a positive impression on the safety.

"I also talked to Coach (Steve) Clinkscale and Coach (Tim) Beckman. They showed us the meeting rooms and all. It was a real cool place. I liked the coaches a lot."

Hill is a man of few words. But even his brief description of his defensive back skills explains why he received a scholarship offer.

"I react to the ball in the air real good. And I really like to tackle. I want to work on my feet and finishing my tackles."

Hill is looking for a college he can call home.

"I'm looking for a family-type environment. I was thinking about majoring in Sports Management or Criminal Justice."

Cass Tech won the Michigan Division 1 state football championship last fall, and Hill hopes to repeat. Prior to that, he has spring track.

"I run the 100 and 200. I made state last year."
