John Groce Named Illini Basketball Coach

The Fighting Illini will announce today the hiring of John Groce as new head basketball coach. The Ohio coach will be introduced at a 1:00 pm press conference at the Assembly Hall.

John Groce is slated to become the 17th coach in the proud history of Illinois basketball at a 1:00 pm press conference Thursday. Born 40 years ago in Muncie, Indiana, Groce has most recently been head coach of the Ohio Bobcats in the Mid-America Conference. He enjoyed an 85-56 record at Ohio in his four years, including 29-8 and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 during the 2011-12 season.

Groce is known as a relentless recruiter and high-energy coach with an exciting style of play. He helped recruit superstars Greg Oden, Mike Conley and Daequan Cook while an assistant at Ohio State, and he is well respected as a recruiter throughout the Midwest.
