Detroit D-Lineman Gibbs Selects Illinois

The Fighting Illini football program continues to add depth to its defensive line with the commitment of Detroit Cass Tech defensive tackle Kenton Gibbs. He is a powerfully built young man with quickness for his position. The fact the Illini have been turning out first round defensive line NFL draft choices was important to Gibbs.

Kenton Gibbs had specific reasons for committing to Illinois Wednesday.

"First off was Coach (Keith) Gilmore. The fact he keeps producing first round NFL draft choices is definitely a plus. And then on top of that, if I'm gonna spend most of my time with the d-line coach, I need to have a good relationship with him. He and I have a great relationship.

"Second was the fact Coach (Tim) Beckman said I could still take my visits and go to camps. Coach Beckman tells me they will just recruit me harder than they did before to make sure I don't go anywhere else."Also, Illinois has a very good Business school."

The 6'-2", 290 pounder has both power and speed for defensive tackle. He performed well at the Nike Football Training Camp in Columbus last Saturday.

"That's what they tell me. I lost one of the one-on-ones, and that's two too many for me. Other than that, I just show what I can do."

Gibbs, who throws the shot put and discus this spring, has a busy summer scheduled.

"I'm going to a camp at Michigan State. I'm also gonna visit Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and Wisconsin. I also hope to visit Illinois during the summer."

Gibbs becomes the 9th known UI commitment for the 2013 signing class.
