Florida DT Likes Fighting Illini Line Success

The success of recent Fighting Illini defensive linemen in the NFL draft has not gone unnoticed by top d-line prospects around the country. The Illini are working hard to add depth to the line, and a number of prospects are intrigued. One who lists the Illini in his top five is Floridian Monty Nelson.

Monty Nelson received a recent scholarship offer from Illinois. He seems pleased with it.

"It's another great offer to add to my list, and another school I'd like to check out."

Nelson has a top five that includes, in no particular order, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Wisconsin, Louisville and the Illini. He has some other favorite schools as well.

"I am also interested in Pitt and Rutgers, among others."

The future Communications major knows what he wants in a college.

"A good education, a depth chart that needs tackles and the quality of the coaching staff."

The 6'-2", 320 pounder has assets that make him a three-star prospect according to Scout.

"I am aggressive, I have good hands and good technique."

Nelson is pleased his Illinois recruiting coach is Keith Gilmore.

"I think he's a great coach, and he is also a d-line coach, which helps out a lot."

Nelson's Plantation, Florida, team had mixed results in 2011, but he had a solid year.

"We went 5-5. I had 10 sacks and nine forced fumbles."

He is pointing to 2012 for team glory.

"We feel like a state championship team."

When does he hope to make his college decision?

"More than likely in the fall."
