St. Louis Star Earns Illini Scholarship Offer

The Fighting Illini football coaching staff took to the road this week, hosting summer one-day evaluation camps at seven venues within the state. They found a few diamonds on their trip, including wide receiver/defensive back Andre Harris. The St. Louis prospect has a strong interest in the Illini as well.

Andre Harris attended the Illinois football camp in O'Fallon Thursday. He was rewarded for his athleticism and overall skill level.

"Illinois gave me my second offer today, as an athlete. The coaches said I performed really well. They said I did outstanding."

He had fun at the camp, so the offer was icing on the cake.

"I enjoyed the camp. I think I performed really well. I did what I needed to do."

Harris came with an offer in mind. His recruiting coach had prepared him well to see Illinois in a positive light.

"Illinois was the first school to be in contact with me. Tim Salem is my recruiting coach. I believe he's a good coach. He's outstanding and has told me a lot of things. We're very close; he kept in touch and kept his word. And I kept in touch with him."

The 5'-11", 157 pounder, who ran a 4.46 forty and the shuttle in 4.11, hasn't seen the UI campus yet. But he's well versed in the overall philosophy of the program.

"One thing I like about Illinois is this team is not about me, it's about we. We play as a team."

If he were to choose the Illini for college, UI coaches would have a tough decision whether to play him on offense or defense. He impressed on both sides of the ball Thursday.

"I play both wide receiver and corner in high school. I don't really have a preference. Maybe wide receiver a little more, but either one is fine with me."

Harris has goals beyond football, influencing his college decision.

"I want to get my education and come out as a successful person. Hopefully, I can play high Division-1 football."

Does he have a major in mind?

"Probably Business. If I have a chance to go to the next level, maybe Sports Management or something like that."

Another Big 10 school was first to offer the St. Louis Kirkwood star. He has a number of schools communicating with him.

"My other offer is Iowa. Wisconsin, Wyoming, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa and a bunch of others have been contacting me."

Harris had a childhood favorite, but it may not have much influence on his final decision.

"Mizzou was my favorite growing up because that was my home town."

He is in no hurry to make a decision.

"I don't have a timetable. Not anytime soon; it will be awhile. I've got a whole other year."
