Florida DB Places UI In Top 3 After Visit

Football players from the South who wish to visit schools in the Midwest must often schedule multiple stops within a brief window of opportunity. Such was the case for Florida defensive back Blake McClain. He didn't have much time to see Illinois during a whirlwind visit, but it was enough to make a strong impression.

Blake McClain is from Florida, but he has a lot of interest from Midwest schools. He recently made a whirlwind tour of several schools interested in his services.

"I saw Illinois, West Virginia, Pitt, Indiana, Kentucky and Cincinnati in four days."

Was he able keep them all fresh enough in his mind to develop preferences?

"Yes. I really liked Pitt, Illinois and Kentucky."

The 5'-11", 180 pounder had only three hours on the Illini campus, but he liked what he saw.

"The visit was good, real good. We toured the campus, looked at the facilities and the academic center. Then I talked to the coaches and Coach (Tim) Beckman."

Illini assistants Steve Clinkscale and Tim Banks have led the way in his recruitment. They are developing a good relationship with McClain.

"The coaches are real good, real nice. I'm most familiar with Coach Clinkscale and Coach Banks. They're real cool and laid-back, and they know what they're talking about."

McClain realizes an opportunity at Illinois. All five defensive back positions are presently led by upcoming seniors.

"They say I would come in and be a nickel or a boundary corner almost right away because they lose a lot of defensive backs. That is what I was thinking about too."

It's a long way until Signing Day, but the Illini are definitely in the mix for McClain's services.
