Illini Evaluate St. Louis Defender At Camp

The Fighting Illini football coaching staff defines their Leo position in broad enough terms to accommodate numerous body types. The hybrid defensive end/linebacker attracts tall, lanky ends with speed as well as linebacker types who can both cover and rush the quarterback. Donnie White looks more like a linebacker but plays like an end.

DeSmet athlete Donnie White participated recently in an Illinois summer camp in Edwardsville.

"It was a pretty good camp overall. I got some good work in. I got better overall."

The 6'-1.5", 206 pounder plays defensive end but is built like a linebacker. Illini coaches found a position that might fit his size and qualifications.

"They were working me at DE/outside linebacker. The hybrid Leo position."

The St Louisan has assets that fit the position well.

"My strengths are my speed and high motor. I'm quick off the ball, and I have a never-quit attitude. And I like to hit."

Of course, there's always room for improvement.

"I want to work on my flexibility. That plays a big part at linebacker. And I want to get bigger."

White boasts an interesting combination of college scholarship offers.

"I have offers from Arkansas, Arkansas State, Ball State, Boston College, Wyoming, New Mexico and Miami of Ohio. I don't really have any preferences. I'm just enjoying the process right now."

That list still doesn't include Illinois.

"I guess I've got to hear back from them after they watch my film. They like me and could possibly offer."

He has a good idea what he wants in his eventual college choice.

"Academics is important to me. And I want a good buy-in with the players and coaches. I want a good interaction with the players."

DeSmet enjoyed success last fall, but White expects better results in 2012.

"We did pretty good. We lost in the semifinals by one point to SLU High School. We lost one of our big-time receivers to OU. But most of our team was juniors, so we've got a lot coming back. We should be pretty good this year."

The Illini camp was White's last stop on a whirlwind tour of college summer camps.

"I'm pretty much through with camps. I just finished a bus tour where we hit Purdue, Illinois, Louisville, Miami of Ohio and Cincinnati. I'm gonna spend the rest of the summer in the weight room working to get better."
