D.C. Safety Continues Pipeline To Illinois

The Fighting Illini football coaching staff continues to impress in the recruiting game. Latest to commit is safety Darwyn Kelly. The H.D. Woodson athlete continues a trend of top D.C. prospects in selecting Illinois.

Washington D.C. safety Darwyn Kelly made a recent visit to Illinois, and he was impressed enough to make his commitment to the school today.

"I felt the family environment. I went down there this past weekend, and they actually care, and they need me. The organization of the team, and the education aspect played a part in it. The fact that I'll be able to come in and compete for a starting spot, that also played a big role in it.

The 6'-2", 195 Kelly can play any defensive back position but is being recruited as a safety. He combines hard hitting with intelligence, reminding of former Illini and Woodson alum Tavon Wilson. If he has the same degree of success as Wilson, he and the Illini will be extremely happy since Wilson was recently drafted into the NFL.

"They felt like I could play both free safety and strong safety. I prefer free, but I feel I can play any of the five positions."

Kelly will help out on offense this fall as well.

"I play a little bit at receiver. But safety is my primary position."

Kelly becomes the 16th known Illini commit. He chose the UI over North Carolina.
