Spearman Productive in Loss

With Simeon Academy's offense struggling to sustain drives Saturday against Loyola, Reggie Spearman and his defensive peers kept trotting back out on the field.

Time after time the defense was forced back out on the field after a punt. And tackle after tackle, Spearman's name would be called through the loudspeaker.

The Chicago Tribune officially credited the senior linebacker with nine solo takedowns and a fumble recovery. But that figure seemed low when compared to additional reports from others at the game. Adding assisted tackles raised the tally over 20 – more than Spearman could count.

"It was definitely the most tackles I've ever made in one game," the Illinois commitment said. "The offense wasn't clicking so the defense had tot get to some stops."

Simeon, ranked in most state high school polls entering the game, fell 20-0.

"We're definitely going to come back and regroup," Spearman said. "We've got to talk about mistakes, what we could do better and move some people around."

While he's focused on improving the team effort, Spearman is also mulling his recruitment options. He's in the process of setting up visits and says Iowa State will be one school he travels to.

That doesn't mean he's backing off his pledge to Illinois.

"I'm still listening to what coaches have to offer, but as of right now I'm still committed to Illinois," he said. "They have the best to offer."

Simeon returns to action Sept. 2 against Peoria Central.
