Staples, Cvijanovic Out for Season Opener

CHAMPAIGN – As expected, defensive lineman Justin Staples will not play in Saturday's season opener against Western Michigan.

That's no surprise, since coach Tim Beckman announced in the offseason that a suspension would take place stemming from Staples' February DUI arrest.

"Justin will not be (playing)," Beckman said Monday.

Staples, a senior from Lakewood, Ohio, played in every game last season, recording 16 tackles.

Despite the looming discipline, he had an impressive preseason camp and has shown a good attitude, according to defensive coordinator Tim Banks.

"He's a kid who plays with great passion," Banks said. "You know, he's always running around. He really plays the game the way you want it to be played, having fun, flying around, getting everyone involved. He's just a bundle of energy, and that's what you look for."

The revelation that offensive lineman Simon Cvijanovic will also not play Saturday was a surprise.

"Simon will not be playing in this football game," Beckman said.

The Cleveland, Ohio native started four games as a freshman last season and has been practicing this preseason. He was expected to be in the mix for a starting position.

When asked to comment on why Cvijanovic is sidelined, Beckman said: "He just won't be playing in this football game."
