Though still early in his recruitment, Matthews (St. Rita High) already feels at ease around the Illini staff.
"I love the new coaching staff," Matthews said. "I feel in love with the whole staff. I really felt like family while I was there. It's just a good environment down there."
Groce and his staff provided their guest with what Matthews called "a nice overall look at the school and campus," and later let him sit in as assistant Jamall Walker worked out guard D.J. Richardson.
"Everything made me feel comfortable," Matthews said. "We're building that relationship, and the coaches have let me know they want what's best for me."
Matthews, considered the No. 2 shooting guard in the '15 class, has five offers, from schools including Arizona, DePaul and Illinois. His trips to Champaign have been the only visits he's taken to this point. While he's impressed with the Illini, he plainly states he's in no hurry to deal with his recruitment.
"I'm not making any decisions anytime soon," he said. "But i really like Illinois."
