Finke Gets Hometown Offer

Champaign Centennial's Michael Finke gets an offer from his hometown school. He was excited, to say the least.

All of the buzz right now in regards to Illinois basketball recruiting has been around the 2013 recruiting class, but Illinois made an offer to a local player who has been on the rise lately in 2014 power forward and Champaign Centennial product Michael Finke.

Finke grew up in Champaign, so Illinois is a program he's always been familiar with. So it's no surprise that the offer had him excited.

"An offer from any school is a great offer," Finke said. "I feel very blessed. It feels great to get an offer from my hometown university."

Coach Groce has brought in a different style of play to Illinois, highlighted by a more uptempo and aggressive offense. The guard play is emphasized, but the play from the big men is important too, and that's been made clear to Finke.

"They have told me I'm a great fit," he said. "They like a 4 that can stretch the floor and shoot it. That is one of my strengths."

Finke already has received offers from Iowa and Wisconsin in the Big Ten, but an offer from Illinois stands out to the Champaign native.

"Obviously getting an offer from a school I have grown up watching is special," he said. "I'm just taking it all in right now. All 3 are great opportunities. I'm enjoying learning about each program and getting to know their staffs."

Now with the offer in hand, will Finke venture a few minutes down the road again to check out the Illini more?

"I have visits planned for Purdue and Missouri," he said. "I may go to the Illinois vs. Penn State game on Saturday."

Be sure to keep checking back in here on IlliniPlaybook as Finke's recruitment progresses.
