Finney Condition in Question

Starter Eric Finney was carted off the practice field Wednesday with an apparent knee injury.

CHAMPAIGN – Given all the injuries the Illinois defense faced a season ago, the last thing anybody in orange and blue wanted to see was a player carted off the field during the first week of fall camp.

But that was the scene following Wednesday's morning practice session.

Current starting Star Eric Finney had to be driven off the field with an apparent knee injury. The staff is hoping for the best when he's evaluated, coach Tim Beckman said.

"We'll see. Again, doctors will find out more as we go," Beckman said.

A 6-foot-1, 205-pound transfer from the College of the Canyons, Finney was worked with the starting defense during the first three days of camp. He earned the job in spring after enrolling in January.

Beckman said he didn't see the play on which the injury occurred.

"Right now, yeah it was more towards the knee area so we'll see," he said. "… I'll have to look at the film to see how it happened."

Finney missed the 2012 season in junior college due to a knee injury. Should he miss time, redshirt freshman B.J. Bello is in line to join the No. 1 defense.
