Friday Night Lights: Maine South at Montini

The quest for a fifth-straight state title for Lombard's Montini Catholic High School starts Friday Night as they host Maine South

Four straight state championships in Illinois high school football is no small feat. Of course they weren't flawless, but the achievement itself is beyond impressive.

Now, Montini has a chance to really make their mark in the record books with a rare five-peat this season. And if they're going to do it, this is definitely the year to make it happen.

The Broncos feature a couple key seniors on defense who will lead the charge:

DL - Dylan Thompson

The 6'5", 275 lb Thompson, an Ohio State Commit, is about to be a load for any offensive line to handle. At his size, he also possesses elite strength, which is no surprise considering that Thompson's second home is the weight room. He'll need to assert his presence early in this one, and if he does, it could set the tone for the rest of the season.

LB - Nile Sykes

Sykes, who sat last year after transferring in from Oak Park-River Forest, is another one of those immediate impact guys. He's most likely to line up at middle linebacker for the Broncos, but his athleticism and strength really allows him to be a rush end, rush linebacker, traditional linebacker, traditional defensive end.. well, you get the idea. He'll have Thompson's back in this one and completes a nasty front seven duo

For Maine South, this will be a bit of a rebuilding year at the skill positions, specifically quarterback. With the departure of Matt Alviti, who was at the helm of Maine South for the last three seasons, Maine South will be looking for some guys to really step up and take charge early in the year.

OT - Brendan Brosnan

One guy they know they can count on is left tackle and Vanderbilt commit Brendan Brosnan, who has the size and long arms to engage defensive linemen well. At 6'6" and 275 pounds, he matches up well size-wise with Thompson, but how well he handles the bullrush of the defensive lineman for Montini will have a huge impact on this game.

If you want to check this one out, the game starts at 7 PM on August 31st at Montini Catholic High School.
