Bates to Be a Bulldog

Former Illini standout Houston Bates is moving closer to home for his final season.

Houston Bates use to be an Illini. Now he's a Bulldog.

He use to play the Leo position. He'll now man the Viper spot. Some things have changed and things haven't.

Bates left Illinois this offseason and has decided to play his final year of college football at Louisiana Tech, he told campusinsiders.com.

Although it's called a different name, he'll play the same position at Louisiana Tech as he did at Illinois, a linebacker-defensive end hybrid.

He recorded 3.5 sacks and 12 stops for loss in 2013 and was expected to be a senior leader for the Illini this upcoming fall. Instead, he elected to play closer to home. He's on track to graduate from Illinois this May, granting him immediate eligibility this season for the Bulldogs.
