Scouting Zack Norvell

Spring Evaluation of Simeon sophomore shooting guard Zack Norvell's performance at the Nike Spring Showdown this past weekend.

One of the best perimeter scorers in Illinois in 2016 is Simeon sophomore Zack Norvell. Running with the Mac Irvin Fire 16U team this spring, Norvell hit the ground running this past weekend at the Nike Spring Showdown in Romeoville, IL.

One of Simeon's key players from this past season, Norvell has already proven to be an important part of the Fire's squad this spring, especially on the offensive end. In his first game of the tournament, the lefty buried three 3-point shots, including one from about 25 feet in the first half.

Norvell uses a combination of hedging hard off of ball screens and a quick release to get open shots off cleanly. He shoots with a high level of confidence and doesn't shy away from having the ball in his hands.

Norvell isn't a point guard-level ball handler, but he's capable of navigating the perimeter and working in the give and go. I'd like to see him be more aggressive in attacking the basket as well as finding more mid-range shots. Norvell didn't get to the free throw line much, but if he can add a dribble drive skill to his repertoire, he could put up even more points on the board.

Defensively, Norvell has good instincts, but he needs to do a better job of moving his feet to maintain the right position. He hits the glass well for a guard and has the awareness to start the fast break following the rebound.

He will be relied upon heavily this coming season by his high school team, so by shouldering some key responsibility for the Fire, it should help him grow into a more confident player this spring and summer.
