2016 Illinois Center Offered

On Thursday night, Illinois extended an offer to one of the state's best in 2016. Get more from the suburban-Chicago big man here.

Illinois has already extended a handful of offers in the 2016 class, but only a couple to centers. On Thursday, the Illini reached out and extended a new offer to one of the state's top big men in Hinsdale (IL) South's Barret Benson.

"Coach Groce called me after I got out of practice and told me they were offering me a scholarship," Benson told IlliniPlaybook.

Benson had been hearing from Illinois, but wasn't expecting an offer.

"It actually came as a pleasant surprise," he said. "We are just getting to know each other, but I'm looking forward to building a relationship with them."

Illinois is being more selective in-state in 2016 when it comes to offers, but Benson has started to prove himself worthy of the opportunity. However, even though he's from Illinois, Benson is keeping his options open from coast to coast.

"I don't think the location of a school plays a large role in my decision," he said, "but, like all offers I receive, this is an honor."

The 6'10" Benson checked out the Illini already this season at the United Center. Though Illinois didn't come out victorious, he still had a good time.

"It was a very fun night and a great experience," he said. "It was a fun atmosphere, especially in the United Center."

The offer from Illinois joins offers from Kansas State, Purdue, Northwestern, Nebraska, DePaul, Indiana, Penn State, and Loyola (IL). Other schools Benson mentioned as being interested included Notre Dame, Stanford, Georgetown, and Saint Louis.
