Illini Offer In-State Safety

Palatine (IL) Fremd safety Kenney Lyke stopped by Champaign and left with an offer. See what he had to say about his Illini experience.

Illinois has already loaded up plenty of offensive talent in the 2015 class and is off to a hot start in 2016. But the Illini are also looking to add some quality defensive prospects on the other side of the ball, and one in particular they have targeted is Palatine (IL) Fremd safety Kenney Lyke.

Lyke, who has been on a roll of picking up offers lately, had a feeling he would be getting an offer from Illinois to go along with offers from Army, Bowling Green, Iowa, Iowa State, Miami (OH), Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Pittsburgh, Toledo, and Western Michigan.

"It was good," Lyke said of the offer. "I was pretty aware that they like the guys to get down there in person before they offer."

On top of receiving the offer, Lyke enjoyed getting to spend time with the staff and seeing practice.

"It was very good, very nice," Lyke said. "The coaching staff is down to earth. It was a good visit."

The visit was Lyke's first trip to campus, and his first impression of Champaign-Urbana and the people at Illinois were positive.

"I liked it, honestly," he said. "It just had that home feeling, you know."

As with many other in-state prospects, the coaches made a point of emphasizing the impact that he could have playing for his home-state school.
