Negron Offered by Childhood Favorite

2017 Elgin (IL) Larkin PF Christian Negron picked up a big, B1G offer on Monday, when the in-state Illini extended him a scholarship.

It was only a matter of time before 2017 Elgin (IL) Larkin PF Christian Negron started to pick up some major offers. But Illinois, who have been a favorite of Negron's since he was young, decided now was the time to extend a scholarship to the high-motor sophomore.

Negron's reaction shows just how much the offer meant to him.

"I just got off the phone with the head coach (John Groce) not too long ago," Negron said. "I'm kind of lost for words. I just told him I appreciate it and that it was huge for me."

Illinois is Negron's first major offer, and it comes from a program he has long followed growing up. The offer was definitely gratifying, but also has lit a fire under Negron to continue to be better.

"It was huge," Negron said. "It let me know where I stood as a prospect and as a player. I see that now I need to work even harder. I've seen people get this far and fall off. I definitely don't want to go there."

Negron said that he hopes to make a visit to Illinois soon. Often spotted at events in Illini gear, Negron has frequently sported orange and blue for a while.

"It was one of my dream schools, so (Illinois) is definitely atop my "list"," he said. "But of course it's early, so I'm being patient. I still want to get on campus and check things out."
