Illinois head coach John Groce announced the dismissal of junior forward Darius Paul on Friday night. Paul was arrested in France for public intoxication, vandalism and resisting arrest during the team's overseas trip. He did not play during the trip due to a shoulder injury.
Groce suspended Paul indefinitely and sent him home early from the trip.
“After further review of the situation, Darius has been dismissed from our team,” Groce said in a statement. “Although his playing days here are over, we are committed to helping him move forward.”
Paul had been suspended the entire 2014-15 season after he failed two team drug tests due to marijuana use and was arrested on the University of Illinois campus for underage drinking and resisting arrest. He spent last season at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, a junior college, and returned to the Illini this summer.
More as the situation develops.
