Illinois has periodically reached into the talent pool at Detroit (MI) Cass Tech, most recently landing 2016 linebacker Tim Walton. But the Illini are hoping to stake a stronger claim at the Motor City powerhouse program moving forward, and one step they have taken in that direction is extending an offer to elite 2018 DB Kalon Gervin.
Gervin, who was on campus with the aforementioned Walton, said he enjoyed his time on campus this past weekend, even despite the outcome.
"It was a good visit!" Gervin said. "Tim (Walton) kept me comfortable the whole time. Illinois is really cool!"
The 2018 DB is part of a long line of talented defenders to come out of Cass Tech, and while he's still young, his potential is great.
The Illini coaches saw that in him and extended an offer to him this weekend, becoming his first Big Ten offer and his third overall offer, joining Akron and Toledo.
Gervin was impressed by the history of the Illinois program and the demeanor and relationship he's built with the coaches.
"I really like the tradition they have at Illinois," he said. "And the coaches are really down to earth."
