Illini LB Julian Jones suspended indefinitely after alleged crime

Illini linebacker booked in Champaign County jail on Wednesday afternoon

CHAMPAIGN - Illinois freshman linebacker Julian Jones has been suspended indefinitely, interim coach Bill Cubit announced, pending an investigation of an alleged crime committed in Georgia during the team's bye weekend of Oct. 16-18.

Jones was booked in Champaign County Jail on Wednesday for a charge of "fugitive from justice." The 18-year-old has a scheduled court date at 1:30 p.m. Thursday for criminal arraignment.

Jones, who has played mostly on special teams this season, has played in eight games this season, including the three games since the alleged crime. The Atlanta native registered a tackle during last Saturday's 48-14 win at Purdue. Jones is listed as the team's third-string weakside linebacker in this week's depth chart.

A press release said Illinois has "no further comment on the issue at this time."
