Illinois basketball will spend next Thanskgiving in Brooklyn.
Illinois will participate in the championship round of the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off next November, along with Florida State, Temple and West Virginia. The first two rounds, which have no bearing on advancing to the championship rounds, will include two home games for Illinois. The full schedule, remaining four teams, and campus-site games will be announced at a later date.
The NIT Season Tip-Off began in 2007, but ESPN Events took over control of the tournament last season with Gonzaga taking the tournament title. Villanova won the event this season with Illinois native Jalen Brunson earning the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. 2016 will mark the first time Illinois has participated in the event.
Illinois usually plays in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament. Last season, the Illini won the Las Vegas Invitational. Three seasons ago, the Illini won the Maui Invitational.
