Mike Ward officially out as Illini LBs coach

Illini linebackers coach will join Beckman's Toledo successor at Iowa State, according to report

Illinois coach Bill Cubit officially announced inside linebackers coach Mike Ward is no longer a part of the program. FootballScoop.com reports that Ward is a candidate to join the staff at Iowa State, which officially announced Tuesday the addition of former Illini assistant Alex Golesh.

The Illini will start a national search for their replacements, according to a release.

Ward and Golesh were Beckman's first hires at Illinois, coming with Beckman from Toledo upon his hire in December 2011.

In addition to three seasons under Beckman at Illinois, Ward spent three seasons under Beckman at Toledo and served with Beckman on Bowling Green's staff for seven seasons. Golesh spent six seasons under Beckman, three at Illinois and three at Toledo. Both Ward and Golesh join the Iowa State staff led by Matt Campbell, who was Beckman's offensive coordinator at Toledo and succeeded Beckman as the Rockets head coach.

Cubit currently has seven assistants, though more turnover could occur.
