Miami DBs coach Paul Williams expected to join Illini staff

Williams spent last 10 seasons under Al Golden; adds East Coast recruiter to Illini staff

Illinois football is expected to hire Miami defensive backs coach Paul Williams, a source confirmed to IlliniInquirer.com. Chicago sports columnist Dave Wischnowsky first reported the news.

Williams spent the last 10 seasons under Al Golden, the last five at Miami and the first five at Temple. Golden, who went 32-25 in four-plus seasons at Miami, was fired after seven games this season.

Williams, who will coach Miami against Washington State in Saturday's Sun Bowl, served on Illini head coach Bill Cubit's Western Michigan staff in 2005 and 2006 and from 1999-2004 coached at Delaware, where both he and Cubit played college football.

While Williams heavily recruited Florida while at Miami, the Delaware native is expected to help more with the Illini's East Coast recruiting efforts.

Cubit said this week that he would hire a secondary and linebackers coach. Williams would fill the former.

Cubit has identified a linebackers coach hire, which likely will be announced some time after this weekend's bowl games.
