LIVE BLOG: Illinois 84, Purdue 70

Illini Inquirer publisher Jeremy Werner is live blogging at the State Farm Center for No. 20 Purdue (14-2, 2-1 Big Ten) vs. Illinois (8-8, 0-3)

FINAL: Illinois 84, Purdue 70

Read the Rapid Recap

Illinois 71, Purdue 56; 3:46 left 1H

The Farm is getting noisy, bracing for a big upset. For the second straight year, Groce's team is out-toughing Painter's team at the State Farm Center.

Mav Morgan has played a great complementary role today. He hasn't been perfect, but he's battling Purdue's bigs and adding some offensive punch (6 points).

Illinois is leading the turnover battle 16-7. That's a huge part of their path to success.

Illinois 65, Purdue 53; 6:53 left 2H

Finke and Nunn both are on the bench with four fouls, and Illinois has widened its lead beause Malcolm Hill is playing like a star. He has 22 points and playing at an elite level on both ends. He hit a stepback fadeaway, rejected Haas on a short shot and dished to Mav for an assist. He now has two free throws after the break.

Illinois 57, Purdue 48; 11:14 left 2H

This is what I wrote a minute ago: "Well, we knew it wouldn't be easy. A.J. Hammons is starting to come alive. For a while, he looked like sophomore, disinterested Hammons. Malcolm Hill has the right look tonight. He's calling for the ball and fully engaged on defense. The Illini need some complementary players to step up."

Then Khalid Lewis got a steal and dished to Nunn for a layup. Then JCL had a great pass to Nunn for a dunk that almost brought the house down.

The Farm is noisy. Some bad news though: Finke picked up his fourth foul. Mav Morgan is going to have to play big here.

Illinois 49, Purdue 39; 17:12 left 2H

Slow second-half starts? Not today. Kendrick Nunn (who started the half on a 9-0 run by himself) and Malcolm Hill (just hit a three) are playing like stars. Illinois needs that consistently to compete in the Big Ten. I often say, the duo needs to combine for 40 for Illinois to win. They have a combined 29 right now.

HALF: Illinois 37, Purdue 37

Pretty encouraging half for Illinois against a better team, but we've seen this before against Notre Dame, Michigan and Missouri before second-half letdowns (Illinois hung on to beat Mizzou).

Positives

- Hill is assertive (13 points on 7 FGAs)

- 50% FG, 5-for-10 three

- 8 to 2 FT advantage

- 8 to 4 turnover advantage

- Finke (2-for-3) and JCL (2-for-2) hot from deep

- Purdue leads in points in the paint by only +6 (14-8)

Negatives

- Purdue leads boards 17-9 (10 to 2 to end the half). Illinois has zero offensive rebounds.

- Purdue shooting 50 percent, including 5-for-11 from three

- Illinois has three offensive fouls (just one other turnover)

- Illinois has six fewer shot attempts

- Nunn is 1-for-4, missed two wide-open threes

- Finke was limited to 8 minutes due to foul trouble

Illinois 30, Purdue 28; 3:55 left 1H

Just when Mav Morgan (4 points) does something to help Illinois, he hurts Illinois. He's a nice threat on offense -- sometimes a black hole (he shoots almost every time he gets it) but he's pretty efficient there. He's grabbed a few good rebounds, but after grabbing one, Vince Edwards stripped him for an easy layup. Groce yelled at him that next time he loses the ball, he better lose his arm too. The Illini want more toughness out of the junior.

Illinois 26, Purdue 22; 7:36 left 1H

The Illini crowd is trying to get into it but Purdue keeps answering, most recently by another Caleb Swanigan three. The freshman big fella has skill. He's got 10 points already on 4-for-5 shooting.

Malcolm Hill has 9 for the Illini and Finke has made two threes (6 points). Nunn has missed two open threes. The Illini continue to get great looks (9-for-18 FG). Purdue's bigs struggling to defend Hill and Finke, who are stretching the floor.

Illinois 19, Purdue 13; 11:05 left 1H

Haas, Swanigan and Hammons are a combined 1-for-3 from the field with three rebounds. That's a big win for Illinois, which is tied 7-7 on the boards right now. A "woah" moment for me: Mav Morgan grabbing a rebound over Isaac Haas. Great -- and rare -- to see.

They're battling and playing physical. They're also winning on the perimeter (winning the TO battle 2-0) and getting to the free throw line (4-for-4 early). Both teams have made three 3-pointers.

Illinois 8, Purdue 5; 15:52 left 1H

Illinois is doubling in the post to give Michael Finke and Malcolm Hill and it's working so far. Purdue is struggling in the post and Illinois is dominating pretty well on the perimeter. They're getting good looks and Malcolm Hill (5 points) is very assertive so far. So far, the Illini are giving Purdue more matchup issues than Purdue is giving Illinois.

Tipoff

Illinois is going with a starting lineup of: Jaylon Tate, Aaron Jordan, Kendrick Nunn, Malcolm Hill and Michael Finke. That group is 2-0 this season.

Jalen Coleman-Lands had started the five previous games.

Illinois is not playing based on Purdue's size. I like that. Try to do what you do. That means run and force turnovers. Illinois must dominate on the perimeter to win this game because Purdue will dominate on the inside.

30 minutes to tipoff

I wasn't worried about Malcolm Hill after one poor outing to start Big Ten play (3-for-11, 11 points vs. Michigan). I was just a tade worried after his second straight poor performance (4-for-13, 14 points at Ohio State). But we've officially crossed the "worried" threshold following a third poor game (4-for-10, 10 points vs. MSU).

Hill is now shooting 32.4 percent, including 2-for-10 from three, during three Big Ten games. He's averaging just 11.7 points per game. Fair or not, Illinois needs him in the 17-25 range EVERY night. The good news for him is that his Robin to his Batman -- or is it the Batman to his Robin? -- Kendrick Nunn returns tonight.

I liked what Khalid Lewis did at Michigan State in his return from mumps. Lewis has proved himself as the team's best option at point guard. Like Jaylon Tate, he's a poor outside shooter, but he can attack the basket. The key for him is to finish and get more FTs.

If you're Illinois, do you try to match Purdue with size and start Mav Morgan AND Michael Finke or do you start Finke and Hill inside? I'd go with the latter. I didn't like what I saw from Finke and Morgan at MSU. Get your best players on the floor.

I brought up 2016 big man targets yesterday. Well, the Illini -- the entire team outside of assistant Paris Parham (who was watching Jordan Goodwin at Highland), Kendrick Nunn and Mike Thorne Jr. -- were watching a 2018 target yesterday. But the Illini weren't the only ones watching Central sophomore guard Tim Finke, Michael's youngest brother. Purdue coach Matt Painter and Michigan assistant LaVall Jordan were in attendance.

40 minutes to tipoff

Illinois has a visitor today

Froling has started an American tour of colleges, starting with Illinois. He'll also visit SMU, Colorado and Arizona. The Illini have a huge need for a big man, of course. If Mike Thorne Jr. returns, he's out of eligibility, leaving Michael Finke, Mav Morgan and Leron Black.

That's why it's a bit curious that Illinois reportedly backed off of in-state big man Nick Rakocevic. Now, I'm told Illinois was recruiting Rakocevic but maybe not as hard as the St. Joseph's big man wanted. It's been an odd recruitment for him. Most schools backed off after a horrendous spring and summer that included many immaturity issues. Now, he's had a huge start to his high school season and programs jumped back in. It's still unclear who is recruiting him hard.

Rako has a lot of similarities to Michael Finke and Illinois might have a bigger need for a banger. But it's just not a good look for Illinois -- on top of losing -- for the narrative to be that you didn't recruit possibly the state's best Class of 2016 prospect hard enough.

60 minutes to tipoff

Tolono native Brian Cardinal is here at the State Farm Center, probably his first look at the new arena. His dad, longtime UI trainer, is showing him around. He still has an 8-0 record against the Illini. And no, Lou Henson has notgiven him a scholarship offer.

75 minutes to tipoff

Purdue is enormous. 7-foot senior A.J. Hammons (14.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg) is an All-Big Ten player. 7-foot-2 sophomore Isaac Haas (11.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg) is one of the most efficient offensive players in the country. And 6-foot-9 Caleb Swanigan (6-foot-9, 250 pounds) is built like a grown man. Swanigan is a Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate, averaging 10.0 points, 8.8 rebounds.

Per KenPom.com, Purdue is in the top-50 in 2-point FG%, effective field-goal percentage, offensive rebound percentage and offensive efficiency. The Boilers are even stronger on defense, ranking first in defensive efficiency, defensive effective FG%, and 2-point FG% defense.

And Illinois doesn't have a Nnanna Egwu to stop or hurt them. Nor a Mike Thorne Jr. Nor a Leron Black. Illinois is one of the worst offensive rebound teams in the country and just allowed 50 points in the paint to Michigan State. This about as bad of a matchup as we could see.

On that subject, I'm told Thorne Jr. and Black still haven't practiced with the team yet. Thorne is doing some work with athletic trainer Paul Schmidt, but it doesn't sound like his return from late November surgery to remove a meniscus is imminent.

90 minutes to tipoff

Jeremy Werner here, sitting courtside at the State Farm Center for the Illini's fourth Big Ten game. The Illini (8-8, 0-3 Big Ten) are still winless during conference play. And Vegas has them as a huge underdog today (+10) against the No. 20 Boilermakers (14-2, 2-1).

Kipper Nichols was getting a sweaty workout in before some of the active Illini came on teh court. First on the court? Freshman D.J. Williams.

New dad Kendrick Nunn is on the court warming up.

It's amazing how these two teams have gone down separate paths since Jan. 21, 2015. Illinois beat Purdue 66-57 that day, and Purdue coach Matt Painter was ejected from the game. He basically was sick of his team's performance and asked to be kicked out. Illinois was 13-7 at that time and improved to 17-8 in the coming weeks. Purdue fell to 11-8 and looked like they were going to miss the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season.

But the Boilermakers are 24-7 (12-4 Big Ten) since last season's loss at Illinois. They are Big Ten title contenders and Matt Painter has his program back on track. Meanwhile, Illinois has gone 10-14 overall over its last 24 games, including 2-7 in the Big Ten, and the future of the program is uncertain -- especially with a new athletic director expected in the next month.

Oh, just a little advice to some football players. Bengals, control your emotions. Vikings, laces out -- I figured "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" had taught all of us that.
