WR McGriff Couldn't Wait to Go Public With Commitment

Saturday's commitment to Illinois by Vero Beach (FL) WR MJ McGriff was no surprise, but the Sunshine State speedster couldn't hold his commitment in any longer and went public on Saturday night with his pledge.

"Not only the football side of things convinced me, but the academics are nuts," McGriff said.  "When they told me most of the kids have jobs before they even graduate, that really sold me."

McGriff had actually committed to the Illini coaches a couple weeks back, but the visit solidified his decision and gave him the right time and place to make his commitment public in person.

"I've actually been committed for two weeks now," he said.  "Again, (on the visit), the academic support stood out dramatically.  And the student atmosphere is amazing."

Bill Cubit has relied heavily on the state of Florida in recruiting his first full class at Illinois.  With a handful of commits from the Sunshine State already, it's no surprise that Cubits, both father and son, were involved in his recruitment.

"It was mainly Ryan Cubit and the big man himself Bill Cubit," McGriff said.  "The relationship is great.  It's really close just because they're from the area where I live."

As for finally getting the commitment off of his chest, McGriff said it was a relief and that he's elated to be an Illini.

"Yeah pretty much (I'm glad it's official)," he said.  "I just couldn't hold it in any longer."
