Illinois dipped heavily into the state of Florida this year, landing more recruits from the Sunshine State than from their home territory. The Illinois secondary has bodies, but is fairly inexperienced and could use an influx of athletic young talent. Clayton, who has the length and athleticism to grow into a prototypical safety, jumped on board and seized the opportunity to develop down the road under the tutelage of a former Miami University DB coach in Paul Williams.
Clayton, who played on both sides of the ball at Coral Reef, has the natural instincts to both recognize and react quickly to plays. At this time, he appears to lack above-average explosiveness and quickness, however those are traits he can improve upon in a college training program.
Clayton has a great frame that is capable of carrying much more weight, however he will need to be cautious not to add weight to a point where he loses speed. His ability to make wise reads in space likely mean he will wind up on the boundary more than in the box, however his run defense should improve as he adds muscle.
