Signing Day Spotlight: Jake Cerny

The letter is in for Traverse City (MI) West OL Jake Cerny. Here's a look at the new Illini signee.

Commitment Date: 8/09/2015

Twitter Handle: @cernyjacob

Why Illinois?

Back in August when he committed, Cerny said the things he liked most about Illinois were that "they're going to be keeping me on the edges at tackle. They said probably good chance I'll play left tackle which will be very appealing, but either way, I'll be out on the edges and I've always played tackle, I want to play tackle, so that fit the bill perfectly."

Now on signing day, Cerny speaks much more to the relationships he's built and the place he will consider 'home.' He said he "chose Illinois not only because of their fantastic reputation in the classroom but the fit that I had with the coaches and the players was remarkable. When I met all the guys for the first time last summer I knew it was the place for me. I fit in perfectly and felt like the coaches actually cared about me. I'm so happy to call Illinois my home now."

We first saw Cerny in person at the 2015 Nike Chicago NFTC camp at Addison Trail HS, where he took home MVP honors.  Cerny is a very technically-sound offensive lineman who wasn't intimidated by some of the elite linemen in attendance.  He moved his feet well and showed good upper-body control in keeping defensive linemen in front of him.

Cerny has the athleticism to play outside at tackle, and could likely excel there, however we are intrigued with his potential at guard and think he could be a hidden gem as a pulling guard similar to a guy like Johnny Caspers at Stanford.
