Why Illinois?

"I wanted to play football at a high level for a school known for academic excellence.  I'm looking forward to the excitement that this staff is bringing to the Illini program.  Go Illini!"

Evaluation:

Palmer is a bit of a tweener between a receiver and a tight end coming out of high school.  He lacks the top-end speed required to primarily play receiver, and lacks the weight and strength to be a blocker early in his college career.  However, what he does have is an athletic build that should allow him to carry more weight in due time and develop into a more well-rounded tight end.

Palmer's tape is somewhat tough to evaluate as DeSmet doesn't have nearly the talent it has had in the past, however it is clear that Palmer is a capable pass-catcher over the middle and his size advantage should allow him to make some tough grabs for first down against shorter linebackers.  If he can continue to add weight without sacrificing his overall dynamic athleticism, he could bloom into another important receiving threat for Illinois along with guys like Holcombe and Thieman.
